HERRIMAN — The search for a missing 13-year-old Herriman girl is over but the police investigation into the situation is still active.
Brooklyn Gittins was picked up by officers at the Walmart off of I-15 near 11400 South just after midnight. She called a family member, the family called police and officers picked her up.
She's been missing since Tuesday night. Investigators are considering the case an "abduction" and now are trying to find the person she was with.
They say Gittins climbed out a bedroom window Tuesday night on her own, but somebody in a car picked her up. It's unknown if it was an adult or a teenager.
In a news conference Friday morning, Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said either way, the person likely will face charges.
Gittens, he said, is a victim because 13-years-olds can't make certain decisions on their own, and someone took her.
"Thirteen-year-old children that walk out, that's one thing. Thirteen-year-old children that walk out and are picked up and transported and held for multiple days, that's an entirely different kettle of fish," Winder said.
Police are calling this an active investigation and are tracking down what they consider to be leads.
The sheriff wouldn't specify what Gittins had been doing or where she had been during the time she was missing.
Thursday 1,083 volunteers participated in a grid search of Herriman city for the girl.
