SALT LAKE CITY — A week after a soccer player collapsed on the soccer field from a cardiac arrest, the boy has died.
Alan Zapata, 11, died Tuesday night after a sudden cardiac arrest caused him to fall into a coma on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
Doctors are performing an autopsy on the boy to look for genetic conditions that could affect his siblings.
Alan collapsed during a Jan. 2 indoor soccer game after complaining of a headache. It was determined the boy had suffered a cardiac arrest, and coaches performed CPR on the boy until paramedics arrived and transferred him to Primary Children's Medical Center.
Primary Children's spokesman Dane DeHart confirmed Wednesday the boy died Tuesday night.
According to a post on a Facebook page set up as a fundraiser for the boy's family, Alan was taken off life support around 11:45 p.m.
The family does not have insurance, so a *fund has been set up in the boy's name to help with medical expenses. People can donate at any Wells Fargo bank under the name "Utah Futbol Club Alan Zapata donation," a fund set up by friends of the family.
