This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Dale Majors was a sophomore in high school when he started his first business. He went to his dad with $50 and said he'd like to go to the freight salvage yard to find materials he could sell on eBay. His dad, George Majors, told him to go for it — and he did….By the time he graduated, he was making five to seven hundred dollars per month, working as little as five hours per week…
Through further experience, he found a niche in bicycle parts…That's how Bikewagon was born. And the timing was great since cycling in the U.S. has been steadily increasing in popularity in the last 10 years. In Salt Lake City, bicycling increased 27 percent from 2010 to 2011.
Starting in the family garage, Bikewagon soon expanded to a 1,500 square foot facility……Today they work out of a 25,000 square foot building in North Salt Lake …. They've grown significantly, and with 25 employees now on board, they're poised for even more growth ….
Ninety percent of Bikewagon's sales take place online, where they cater to mid-grade cyclists….But there's also the new storefront just off Redwood Road in North Salt Lake….. Bikewagon offers everything from Fuji bikes to parts, handlebars, forks, tires, tubes, accessories, cycling shoes and helmets…And true to their DNA, many of their components for people who bought a bike a few years ago and want to replace it with the same components….
Another reason for Bikewagon's growth is because the owners understand cycling ….Dale is a touring cyclist who's ridden from Canada to Mexico and completed a tour of Europe. This last summer went through Washington and Oregon with his wife and two kids.
As a lifestyle company, Bikewagon offers a 3,000 square foot gym on site, along with table tennis, weight equipment, wrestling mat and cardio machines. It's an important part of the business, to give employees a great experience and opportunity for a healthy lifestyle.
For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
