HERRIMAN — Kids affected by superstorm Sandy will receive some Christmas cheer from Utah this year.
In November, fourth-grade student Marissa Acocks approached her teacher about a desire she had to provide Christmas toys for children whose lives had been effected by Sandy.
Marissa has no tie to the area hit by the storm, yet her heart had greatly been touched by watching the destruction and how many children her age had lost everything during the storm.
Upon approval of the principal and with the help of her mother in securing a way to ship the toys to New York and New Jersey, Melissa established a toy drive at our school with the goal of collecting 1,000 toys for these children. The toy drive began Dec. 1, and the goal was exceeded.
The students of Silver Crest Elementary, whose hearts have also been touched as result of this 9-year-old girl stepping up and expressing a desire, have donated over 1,000 new toys to be shipped to children affected by Sandy.
