LOGAN — A driver was pulled over by an unlikely vehicle: a full-size fire engine.

On Monday, the firefighters decided not to wait around for the police when they noticed some dangerous activity on Highway 89 right outside of Logan. The vehicle was heading southbound, weaving in and out of traffic.

"Central dispatch received a phone call from Logan fire," said Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Brian Locke.

With their lights flashing, the fire engine convinced the driver to pull over near 1700 South. But, the driver didn't wait for the firefighters to approach her, and she drove away and continued down the road.

"And then decided that (the car) was going to proceed on and then they started following it again, and calling all the information in to dispatch," Locke said.

Finally, after the fire truck flashed its lights a second time, the driver stopped.

"Shortly after that, there were UHP and sheriff's deputies that were able to show up there," Locke said.

Deputies say the driver told them she was heading to the airport and that she was late for her flight. In talking with her more, they found she was actually 14 hours late. Janice R. Mills, 56, of North Carolina, was booked into the Cache County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The firefighters said their intention in flashing their lights was to keep the road safe and to keep other drivers away from Mills.

"It was really dangerous, so they did the right thing by sticking with it until the deputies got there," Locke said. Locke said it's highly unusual to have a suspect stopped by a fireman.

"It's probably not something that firemen like to do," Locke said, "but it was probably something that had to be done."
