White Gets Last-Play Victory Over Red in Spring Game

SALT LAKE CITY - The White team defeated the Red squad 22-21, scoring a touchdown on the last play of Saturday's University of Utah Red-White Spring Game. Quarterback Kevin Dunn hit wide receiver Sean Smith with a 20-yard touchdown pass for the game-winner.

The White Team, made up of second- and third-team players, was staked to a 16-0 lead to start the game. The Red Team scored once in the first half to get within 16-7. Quarterback Brett Ratliff found wideout Marquis Wilson with a 10-yard pass for the score. Louie Sakoda tacked on the point-after-touchdown.

The Red squad pulled within two points, 16-14, early in the second half. Quarterback Tommy Grady, who played for both teams, fired a 14-yard scoring strike to Freddie Brown.

Grady then tossed another TD pass to give the Red a lead late in the contest. Grady scrambled to his right and found wide receiver Derrek Richards open in the right-front corner of the end zone. Sakoda's third successful PAT of the day put the Red on top 21-16 with less than 10 plays remaining in the scrimmage.

The White team took over at its own 45-yard line. After a sack by defensive back Eric Shyne, the White squad faced a 4th-and-20 situation with four plays left in the scrimmage. Dunn hit tight end Colt Sampson for a 21-yard gain to keep the drive alive. With two plays remaining, Dunn scrambled to his right and ran out of bounds a the Red 35-yard line.

Red defensive lineman Paul Soliai made a little too much contact with Dunn - quarterbacks were off limit to contact. Head coach Kyle Whittingham awarded the White team a 15-yard penalty for hitting the quarterback, setting up Dunn's game-winner to Smith.

Grady was 8-of-16 passing for 144 yards and two scores, after seeing action for both squads. Ratliff finished the day 5-of-12 for 37 yards and one score. Dunn was 5-of-11 for 59 yards and the game-winning TD pass.

Brown led the Red team in receiving, hauling in four balls for 35 yards and a TD. Wilson and Richards had three receptions each for 63 and 53 yards, respectively. Both Wilson and Richards had a touchdown catch. Bradon Godfrey was the leading receiver for the White team, grabbing two aerials for 30 yards. Smith had two catches for 26 yards and a TD.

Mike Liti led all rushers, going for 20 yards on just two carries for the Red team. Darryl Poston toted the pigskin three times for 17 yards for the Red. Brady Phillips was the only White team rusher with positive yardage, running for one yard on one carry.

The Utah football team's spring practices concluded with Saturday's scrimmage.
