SALT LAKE CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

In Utah we're home to a thriving airport serving over 20 million passengers every year. The Salt Lake City International Airport is one of Delta's hubs, and this has been a major driver in our economic growth. Not to mention we have one of the lowest costs per passenger in the United States.

To continue offering the best service and safety to millions of passengers coming through Salt Lake City every year, the airport has developed a comprehensive plan to build a brand new airport. Phase one of the project, relocation of the de-icing pads, is already underway.

Executive Director Maureen Riley said the airport followed an extensive process to determine a solution for our aging airport. It's expanded in stages to accommodate growth, and we're still operating at almost double the capacity the Salt Lake City International Airport was built for. At its origins, the airport was not intended to be a connecting hub; however, today 45 percent of passengers are only changing planes.

Leadership at the Salt Lake City International Airport has created a plan to redevelop the terminals over the next 8 to 10 years in stages so air travel will continue during construction. The redevelopment will improve customer service, address seismic risks, provide correct-sized facilities and solve operational problems … all while maintaining competitive costs.

Another major project for the airport is a complete overhaul of the concession area. In addition to national chains, there's a focus on some of our local favorites … like Market Street Grill, Squatters and Café Rio. This renovation will be complete in December.

Maureen says the construction process for the Salt Lake City International Airport is created with a built-in safety net. This means they can discreetly demolish old facilities, build new ones and once a phase is complete … they can stop and evaluate before continuing. By the way, this project won't cost taxpayers anything because it's being funded with federal grants, airport revenue and user fees. The timing couldn't be better with the Trax line to the airport opening next spring.
