PROVO — Sears announced this week that the Provo location will remain open after previously being scheduled to close early next year.
Sears Holdings Corp. announced in February the closing of approximately 120 Sears and Kmart stores nationwide, including the location at the Provo Towne Centre Mall and Fashion Place Mall. Store officials said members of the surrounding community asked for the Sears to stay, prompting store ownership to reconsider staying open.
Sears Holdings sold 11 of its stores, including the Provo Towne Centre Mall location, to General Growth Properties for $270 million. A new agreement allows Sears to lease back the space from GGP.
Provo Mayor John Curtis said it is great news for Provo.
"This is great news for Provo. Sears has been here a long time, playing an important role in our economy and our quality of life," Mayor Curtis said. "It's a go-to place that many would be lost without."
