There was much hope in the Twittersphere as Utah took the field to take at No. 8 Oregon State Saturday night. Ute fans were hoping for a great rushing game by Wolfman himself, John White IV.
@espn700rick: Would love to see a healthy John White IV get 20 + carries balanced with a Travis Wilson 250 yd game. Would give the #utes a solid chance.
The Utes defense came out strong, making OSU punt the ball. The offense with a decent drive from Wilson, Utah's starting quarterback.
@ianthompson08: That's a good start for the D and the O! #Utes
@SpryUte: What is this?! Looks like that offense thing other teams have! #UTAHvsOSU
But the drive fell short as Coleman Petersen missed a 42-yard field goal wide left to keep the game scoreless.
@BJ_Beckman: At what point does Utah just realize attempting field goals is pointless? #utes #beavers
Defensively, Utah continued to hold the Beavers, especially with pressure on the receivers.
@TheUFanCast: #Utah #Utes defense doing their job. Offense MUST score. 3rd down play calling must get better. QB Wilson 2 for 2 with 45 yards passing.
Wilson's potential perfect game was blemished as he threw an interception, which led to a Beaver touchdown. The offensive line also let the Oregon State defense get through it one too many times, sacking Wilson, causing a fumble, and leading to another Oregon State touchdown.
@johncoonsports: Two #Utah turnovers lead to a pair of Oregon State TDs. The Beavers lead 14-0. This game is over and the #Utes' bowl hopes probably are too.
@EricTLund: UtahvsOSU: The #Utes are passing out gifts to the Beavers as if it was Christmas. After an INT & fumble #Utah is down 14-0 in 2nd qtr.
#utenation were starting to think wishfully.
@MeridianLehi: Is there anyway the #Utes can get back in the MWC?
Although that wish didn't come true, Ute fans everywhere were wishing for a touchdown and they got just that when Wilson connected with Jake Murphy in the endzone to cut the lead to seven at 14-7.
@bsgillis: And there's a #Utes TD. And a penalty that doesn't go against Utah. And the kick is good. Miracles do happen.
@BrettBruneel: Would've been easy for Wilson to fold after those 2 TOs. Instead he's got his team back in this game. I like this kid. #Utes #utesvsosu
@utahathletics: Halftime: OSU 14, Utah 7. Both OSU TDs came after Ute turnovers gave Beavers ball inside Ute 20. Utes score on Wilson-Murphy pass. #utes
The second half felt like an Obama campaign: a lot of hope, but no real change. Utah drove into the red zone, but on third-and-10, though, with a questionable slant running play called, Devonte Christopher fumbled the ball in the backfield and Oregon State recovered.
@RobertGehrke: Fumble. Absolutely crushing after a big drive. Terrible. #utes
@jeffbevan: remember how it should be 17-14, Utah. But we have an incompetent kicker & our best wr can't hold onto the ball #utes #utahvsosu
It was Utah's best chance to tie the game, but a fourth-quarter touchdown by OSU followed by a Wilson interception sealed the deal for the Beavers at 21-7.
@espn700james: Dropped passes, mental mistakes, no pressure on QB, not good enough in pass pro, can't kick a FG... Just to name a few. #Utes
Utah fans can try to look at the glass half full though. The Utes had more rushing yards, more total offensive yards, and held the ball for nearly 10 more minutes than Oregon State. The glass half empty? The Utes lost with four turnovers and seven penalties.
@SwitchingReels: Saw some great improvement from Travis Wilson. Keep improving! #Utes beat themselves tonight and hopefully they learn from it. #GoUtes!
