SOUTH JORDAN — The Utah Department of Transportation opened yet another portion of the Mountain View Corridor on Saturday, and bicyclists were the first to hit the pavement.
The nine-mile stretch opened in South Jordan Saturday morning to more than 100 bicyclists ready to ride the new trails on the corridor. The road and bike path stretches from Old Bingham Highway to 5400 South, and is the largest portion to open so far.
The celebration included games, food and a 20-mile bike ride for those who braved the weather.
"We are pretty excited for the number of people who came out here," said Mountain View Corridor Project Manager Teri Newell. "It's pretty cold."
She says after deciding to include bikers in the plans, everything just fell into place.
"I think this was a natural fit for there to be bike lanes along this corridor," Newell said.
UDOT says they hope people take advantage of the new trails, which take advantage of new technology like radar detectors that change the turn signals for cyclists crossing from Redwood Road to the corridor.
The first batch of riders say it's worth breaking out your bike.
"I like that the corridor has a bike lane," said rider John Adamson. "Moving forward in the future, I think more people are going to be riding. It's nice they are thinking about that."
