SANDY — Four hours of tense moments came to an end in Sandy after a man who shot off a shotgun in his backyard turned himself over to police.

John Travis Campbell, 38, was arrested by Sandy Police Saturday night after he surrendered peacefully to police. Neighbors heard yelling and gunshots from the backyard of his home at 291 E. 8680 South in Sandy around 4:30 p.m. Police reported one bullet went through the wall of a home to the north. Nobody was injured.

Police evacuated a dozen homes near Sandy elementary school as SWAT surrounded the home. SWAT attempted to call Campbell several times, but he didn't answer for four hours.

Eventually, they got a hold of Campbell's girlfriend, who was able to make contact with him. He then surrendered himself to police and was taken into custody.

Police say campbell had called them earlier Saturday asking about gun laws, but they didnt know why he was asking about them.

Campbell faces several charges, including public intoxication and reckless endangerment.
