Top five performances in week 3
It was very difficult to limit this list to five players. There were a dozen or more players who had games worthy of mention.
Taylor Camp QB Orem
Camp and the Orem Tigers made the trip north on I-15 to play the Highland Rams of Pocatello Idaho in the Rocky Mountain Rumble. Camp stunned the Rams with his arm leading the Orem offense to 29 points by halftime. He finished the game having completed 23-35 passes for 394 yards and five touchdowns leading the Tigers to a 42-24 victory. Nolan Camp caught 8 of those passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns. The Stanford commit is the heart and soul of a very talented Woods Cross team and led by example in a big win over Mountain Crest. He rushed for 190 yards and a touchdown on offense and picked up a sack on defense. He did this while sitting out just four plays during the game. Prentiss Miller RB Pine View
Miller set a state record last week for carries in a game with 51. This week he took it easy carrying the ball just 21 times. He still managed to gain 250 yards and score three touchdowns helping Pine View crush Uintah. Miller is 2nd in the state in rushing with 610 yards this season. Tani Lehauli RB Granger
I mentioned Miller is 2nd in the state in rushing. Tani Lehauli is first. He has rushed for 647 yards on just 41 carries (15.8 yards per carry) and that doesn't account for what he's done in the return game. Last friday in an overtime thriller against Cyprus he rushed for 282 yards and four touchdowns including one rushing touchdown on a fake punt. He also returned a kick 96 yards for a 5th touchdown. He finished with 397 total yards in the win. Willie Uasilaa RB Layton
Uasilaa was a workhorse for the Layton Lancers. He carried the ball 36 times for 212 yards and four touchdowns powering the Lancers to their first win of the season. Top five most impressive wins in week 3
Logan Grizzlies
Logan entered Friday's showdown with then No. 2 Bountiful missing 5 starters due to injury. They lost four more during the course of the game yet they not only found a way to knock off the Braves but they did so convincingly, 35-14. Starting free safety Chase Nelson was injured forcing Hunter Ballam to move to a new position. He made the transition look seamless as he picked off four Bountiful passes to lead the way for the Grizzlies. Quarterback Luke Falk completed 32 of 49 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns while Jesse Braddy found the end zone four times. The win vaulted the Grizzlies from unranked to 2nd in the 4A Coaches Poll. Bingham Miners
One week after suffering a heartbreaking loss to their rivals at Rice Eccles Stadium the Miners bounced back nicely representing Utah well with a thrilling win over Colorado powerhouse Valor Christian. It wasn't pretty but the Miners rallied late to tie the game and then knocked down a pass on a two-point attempt to clinch the win. Timpanogos
I said last week that if Timpanogos would defeat Pleasant Grove that the Timberwolves would really get my attention. They pulled off the upset and definitely have my attention as well as the attention of other 4A teams in the state. They once again found themselves trailing against a 5A team but the defense would step up in the final three quarters intercepting four passes and shutting out the Vikings while the offense scored 21 unanswered points to claim the 27-13 victory. I know Fremont is down right now but this is Roy we are talking about. The Royals had lost 11 straight games to Fremont and had not started a season 3-0 since 2004. Not only did they stun the Silverwolves but they shut them out 26-0. Head Coach Fred Fernandes has this team believing they are a winner. It won't be easy to earn one of the four playoff spots available in Region 5 but they are making a statement to the rest of the teams that they are going to battle each week for one of those spots. The Buckaroos made the 6 hour bus ride to Layton to take on the Eagles of Layton Christian Academy in a battle of ranked teams. The long trip didn't seem to have any affect on their energy. They crushed LCA 35-0. The defense forced four interceptions, one of which was returned 21 yards for a touchdown by Gunnar Hollingsworth. The win earned Monticello a No. 2 ranking in 1A.
