SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A weapon wielded by one of two people killed in a shootout with police in Kansas has turned out not to have been the one used to kill Steven J. Poulos.

The two killed in the shooting, Alicia Wingate Cardall, 26, of Salt Lake City, and Aaron Millenson, 18, of Englewood, Colo., remain the suspects in the Poulos slaying, even though ballistics tests have found that the gun Millenson was carrying that day did not match the weapon used to kill Poulos.

Poulos, 80, was found shot to death in the basement of his Holladay, Utah, home on Jan. 14. Poulos was a World War II veteran shot five times on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France.

Neighbors saw a man and a woman being dropped off by a cab at the victim's house that day. It was believed they may have inquired about a car Paulos was selling.

When family members came home later in the day, they found Poulos dead and the car gone.

Police became aware of Wingate as a possible suspect after they tracked her through phone records documenting she made a call to the Poulos home the day of the slaying. Cell phone records led investigators to Colorado and eventually to Kansas, where the shootout occurred on Jan. 25.

Although the ballistics do not match, investigators still call Millenson and Wingate their main suspects, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Jaroscak said Wednesday.

Detectives still would like evidence that directly puts the pair inside the house.

Poulos' wife, Billie, said that to the family, it's clear who committed the crime and the case is over.

"We sort of put it all behind us at this point and we're just leaving (the investigation) to (detectives), she said. "We're at the point now we're just trying to move on.... Nothing will ever really tell us what actually happened in this house because those two people are gone."

Authorities also have not located the missing car.
