OLDHAM, England, Apr 19, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A 49-year-old woman in Britain won a gold watch and praise for her 25 years of loyal service at her bedding company then was sacked.
Shirley Ogden of Oldham heard her managing director praise her for her "loyalty, hard work and flexibility," reports the Daily Telegraph. When she went to collect her inscribed watch a week later, she was told by the same boss she was on a list of 12 people being cut.
"When it came time to say I was being made redundant, (her boss) did not even mention the presentation," said Ogden. "It was as if it hadn't happened."
Her severance got her 12 weeks' salary but no loyalty bonus. Ogden, a grandmother and the sole provider for herself and her disabled husband, is planning legal action, says the report.
The managing director told the newspaper the timing of the dismissal was unfortunate but that proper procedures had been followed.
