PROVO — A body was discovered by a hiker Wednesday in Rock Canyon.
A Utah Valley University student discovered the body of a 20 to 30-year-old man at the Rock Canyon trail head at about 11:30 a.m. and called police. Investigators are working to identify the body, according to Lt. Matt Siufanua with the Provo Police Department.
The body was found about 100 yards to the left of the gate that leads to the trail, according to Siufanua. The cause of death is currently unknown, although Siufanua said "by some accounts, it was obvious that it was a fall." Police estimate that the man fell between 100 and 150 feet.
The lieutenant said the area where the body was found is quite steep and rocky, with steep cliffs on all sides.
"It's very high and very dangerous if you're up in the mountains hiking without equipment," he said.
Police estimate the man's body had been there one or two days. His identity was not released Wednesday.
