NEW YORK, Apr 18, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., is leading the campaign fundraising race for the 2006 elections, creating a pool that could fund a presidential bid.

Clinton raised $6 million from Jan. 1 to March 31 and outdistanced the 32 other senators seeking re-election this fall as well as her prospective rivals for the presidential nomination, The Washington Post reported.

She has raised more than $39 million for her re-election effort since winking a Senate seat 2000. Election law allows anything left from a Senate campaign to be transferred to a presidential campaign.

Among Republicans, Sen. George Allen of Virginia is showing the most fundraising muscle, collecting $1.75 million for his re-election fight and closing the quarter with $7.2 million on hand.

But unlike Clinton, who faces two little-known Republican opponents in her bid for a second term in November, Allen faces a potentially serious challenge this fall from Democrats -- either technology lobbyist Harris Miller or Reagan administration Navy Secretary James Webb, the report said.
