POCATELLO — Evacuations are in place for a destructive fire on the west bench in Pocatello.

The Bureau of Land Management says the Charlotte Fire sparked just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday. As of Friday afternoon it was estimated to be around 1,000 acres with about 30-percent containment.

Sarah Wheeler with BLM told KPVB that as many as 66 homes and 29 outbuildings have been lost and around 700 are threatened. Bannock County Sheriff's Office said 1,000 people have been evacuated, but further evacuations are not expected. No injuries have been reported.

Crews say the fire was human-caused, but it is still under investigation.

Bannock County has declared a county disaster, allowing more resources to be available to help fight the fire and to assist victims of the fire.

Holt Arena and Century High School in Pocatello have been converted to temporary emergency shelters for evacuees.
