SANDY — Gunfire, explosions and a heavy police presence will be part of a drill at Alta High School this morning to help law enforcement and school officials prepare for a disaster.
The goal of this training, which was to begin around 8 a.m., is to prepare police, students, teachers and other staff to respond to reports of violence at the school, specifically a Columbine-like crisis.
Earlier this spring students and teachers were trained on how to spot and report suspicious activity. Many of those students will participate in today's School Safety Drill.
The "Plan, Prepare, Protect" program involves district officials, school counselors, the Utah School Boards Association and local law enforcement.
If you are in the area you may see road block signs, police officers, maybe even groups of students leaving the school.
The Utah Division of State Risk Management is working with the Canyons School District as a model school district to create a statewide training video.
