PROVO -- Police say an Amtrak train hit and killed a Provo man early Friday morning.
About 5:30 a.m., Jose Gamboa, 67, was trying to cross the Union Pacific tracks at 700 West and 600 South against a lowered rail crossing signal arm. He stepped in front of an oncoming train and was hit, said Provo Police Sgt. Mathew Siufanua.
Investigators say the train was eastbound at 35 to 40 mph at the time of the accident. The train conductor confirmed the crossing arms at the intersection were down.
Investigators say Gamboa was on his way to work.
As of noon, there were no known witnesses other than the train conductor. The conductor says he did not see the man until the collision. Passengers on the train didn't see what happened. Investigators are looking for any other witnesses.
"We could speculate all day long as to what the (victim) was trying to accomplish," said Provo Police Chief Rick Gregory. "Whether he was trying to get across the train track before the train got here, or if there was some alcohol or drug involved or what-have-you, we don't know any of that at this point and we won't for some time."
Anyone who saw the accident can call police at 801-852- 6210.
