SALT LAKE CITY — UTA fares and passes will increase in price beginning Sunday.
The price of a one-way ticket will go from $2.25 to $2.35, a round-trip ticket will increase from $4.50 to $4.70, and group passes will increase from $13.50 to $14.00.
The basic fare increase was approved by the board of trustees on March 23, 2011. It was to gradually increase 25 percent over three years. The first change took place on May 1 when the base fare went from $2 to $2.25. Sunday's increase is the second increment. The base fare for adults will assume its full rate of $2.50 on April 1, 2013.
The fare increases are designed to maintain operations and keep pace with inflation, UTA officials said.
Fares account for approximately 11 percent of UTA's annual revenues and make up 20 percent of UTA's overall budget. Fare increases are independent of fuel surcharges, which may occur as fuel prices fluctuate.
