SALT LAKE CITY — Hitching his campaign to Utah's improving economy, Gov. Gary Herbert will announce his bid for re-election Tuesday.
The Republican governor says he has worked hard to create an environment in which the state can grow and increase the availability of good-paying jobs. Utah added 36,000 jobs last year, and the unemployment has fallen to 5.7 percent, he said.
Herbert assumed office mid-term when Jon Huntsman Jr. resigned in August 2009. Herbert won election in 2010 to fill the remaining two years on Huntsman's term and is seeking his first full term as governor.
Herbert will make his announcement from a new campaign office in Murray.
To date, Herbert has one intraparty challenge. State Rep. Ken Sumsion, R-American Fork, filed for office last Friday. Democrat Peter Cooke, a retired two-star general, also has filed.
