SANDY — A Granite Credit Union branch manager has been charged in connection with more than $34,000 discovered missing from his branch after a Jan. 31 audit.
A surprise audit of the cash deposits was conducted at the branch, located at 9151 S. Quarry Bend Drive, and several teller drawers came up short. Mason Lee, 29, was informed of the shortages and was asked who had access to the drawers. According to theft charges filed Wednesday in the 3rd District Court, Lee appeared visibly nervous.
Lee was then asked whether the security cameras were operational to determine who had taken the cash. Lee then "broke down and confessed to taking the money," the charges state.
After the initial audit, $6,947.34 was determined to be missing from the vault, but a more thorough audit conducted by the credit union's accounting department determined the loss was actually $34,339.91.
Lee allegedly told a Sandy detective he began taking money from the credit union in June or July to pay for rent, food and car loans, and he planned on paying the money back.
According to the court documents, Lee then provided a detailed explanation to the detective on how he had taken the money. Lee was charged with one count of theft, a second-degree felony.
