STANSBURY — It was senior night at Stansbury High School Tuesday, but that didn't stop the visiting Morgan Trojans from dropping by and taking charge with a dominating 71-54 win.
The Stallions weren't just playing for their senior squad, but they were also fighting for a spot in the 3A State Tournament.
Although the Stallions hung tough for some of the game, it wasn't enough to beat the overpowering Trojans, whose top three players — Jake Miles, Boston Saunders and Colby Skinner — combined for 59 points.
Stansbury's Stone Tia led the way for the Stallions with 13. Teammates Ryan Robbins and Kirby Harris scored 12 and 10 respectively.
At the end of the first quarter, the Stallions trailed by six points, and they had held Jake Miles, Morgan’s leading scorer (19.9 PPG) to zero points. Unfortunately for the Stallions, Jake came out and scored eight quick points in the second quarter to help the Trojans take a 32-21 lead at the break.
From that point on, the Trojans never looked back and dominated the Stallions on both ends of the floor. They showed why they were on an 11-game winning streak, and why they were the best team in Region 11 — and, arguably, in all of 3A.
The Stallions ended the season with a 9-12 record overall and a 5-7 record in Region 11.
Morgan will head into the 3A State Tournament with the number one seed and an 18-3 record, including a 12-0 record in Region 11. The Trojans will play their first tournament game on Saturday.
