SANTA MONICA, Calif., Apr 12, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The youngest member of the 1980s hitmakers the Pointer Sisters, June Pointer, has died of cancer in Santa Monica, Calif., at age 52.
Pointer, who had been hospitalized since January, died Tuesday, her family said in a statement released Wednesday.
"(June died) in the arms of her sisters Ruth and Anita and her brothers, Aaron and Fritz, by her side," the statement said. "Although her sister Bonnie was unable to be present, she was with her in spirit."
The multiple Grammy Award-winning Oakland, Calif., sisters had a string of hits in the 1980s such as "Jump (For My Love)," "He's So Shy," "Automatic," "I'm So Excited" and "Neutron Dance."
June Pointer admitted to years of substance abuse and pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine in 2004, E! Online said.
Her drug problems led to her eventual expulsion from the singing group, E! said.
