SALT LAKE CITY -- A new scam targeting Facebook users aims to capitalize on some users' dislike of the site's new Timeline feature.

Timeline, which was rolled out to the public the third week of December, has been met with vehement opposition by some of the site's users, who protest many of Facebook's aesthetic overhauls.

Since Timeline's activation, scammers have developed multiple Facebook pages dedicated to deactivating the feature, which is permanent once activated. The pages often require users to "like" the page, post videos and pictures to their profiles and invite friends to do the same.

Some scams may not have much more of an effect than forcing the user through a series of meaningless actions, but others could infect the user's computer with malware or viruses.

The fraudulent pages range from having a few hundred fans to more than 10,000. It is largely up to Facebook users to report suspicious activity on the site, by clicking the "Report Page" link near the bottom of the page on the left-hand side.

Facebook has seen backlash in the past for introducing major changes to the social network's platform. Menu redesigns, profile overhauls and changes to the way users interact have all sparked movements among users to protest the changes.

The protests are often in the form of Facebook pages created to "tell Facebook we want the old profile back," but new designs also see a rash of scam pages that allegedly revert the user's profile to the old design.

Facebook is encouraging users to check the site's security page regularly for warnings and safety tips.
