OGDEN — Less than a day old, Jaden Wayne Adams has already won his first race.
The 8 pound 5 ounce infant was the first baby born in Utah in 2012, arriving five seconds after midnight Sunday at Ogden Regional Medical Center, edging out an infant born at Salt Lake area hospital just four seconds later.
Jaden appeared to take his status as New Year's Baby in stride, sleeping away much of the first day of 2012, his dad said.
The 21-inch boy is the first-born son of Sandy and Bryant Adams of Ogden. The boy made his auspicious debut after about 19 hours of labor.
The couple didn't intend to race the clock, Bryant Adams said.
"Sandy started pushing around 11 because she couldn't stand it any more. We thought maybe we'd get that far (midnight) but she just wanted to be done. Finally, we looked up at the clock and it was 10 minutes 'til."
The doctor told the couple, "All right, let's go for it. She kept pushing and pushing," Bryant Adams said.
Five seconds into 2012, according to a hospital monitor, little Jaden was born.
Asked what he'd tell his son about the day of his birth, Bryant Adams said, "We're just going to tell him he has the coolest birthday in the world, the first birth in 2012 in Utah that we know of."
