MILLCREEK -- Two officers from the Unified Police Department crashed into each other while looking for a suspect Tuesday night.
Both officers were westbound on 3900 South around 10:30 p.m., looking for a man who was threatening suicide in his car. When the police vehicles approached 2700 East, the officers spotted the suicidal man headed east. One of the officers changed directions, in U-turn fashion, to try to follow him.
Unfortunately, the other police car was too close and the two vehicles slammed into each other nearly head-on. Both airbags deployed and the officers had minor injuries, mostly scrapes and bruises. They were taken to Intermountain Medical Center for evaluation but are expected to be OK.
Their vehicles sustained significant damage and will need major repairs.
Police have released no information about the man the officers were pursuing.
A Unified Police Department spokesman says the South Salt Lake Police Department is handling the investigation into the crash and will have more information later this morning.
