Prep basketball: West Jordan is No. 1 in KSL Coaches Poll

SALT LAKE CITY - 5A has a new No. 1. The West Jordan Jaguars have risen to the top of the 5A poll after claiming the championship of the Great Western Shootout on Saturday. The Jags started the season 7-0 with wins over ranked opponents Davis and Orem before being upset by Riverton Tuesday.

Games to watch this week
Dixie Great 8
Dixie State will host 12 Utah teams in a three day tournament. Teams participating will be Bountiful, Timpview, Lehi, Hurricane, Parowan, Salem Hills, Snow Canyon, Wasatch, Desert Hills, Dixie Pine View and Viewmont. Games will run through Thursday.West Jordan vs. Fremont Wednesday 5:15 pm at Riverton HS
The Silverwolves will get their shot at the state's No. 1 team on a neutral court at the Riverton Winter Invitational.No. 1 Bryce Valley vs. No. 2 Piute 7pm Thursday
The top teams in 1A will go head-to-head in a huge pre-Christmas matchup.Ogden at Morgan 7pm Wednesday
The Odgen Tigers are much better than their 3-4 record would indicate. They get a chance to prove it on the road against the 5th ranked Trojans.Weber vs. No. 1 Wasatch Academy 8pm Wednesday at SLCC
The top team in 2A will get a shot at a 5A team. Wasatch Academy will take on Weber, a 5A team receiving votes in the 5A Coaches' Poll.

The only undefeated team in 5A moves up to No. 2 in the latest KSL Coaches' Poll. The American Fork Cavemen earned a big road win at Alta and took care of business at home against a solid Brighton team.

Lone Peak has dropped to No. 3 after being upset by Orem 57-51 in the Great Western Shootout.

Alta holds at No. 4 followed by Davis at 5. The Darts upset Mountain View from Mesa Arizona before falling to West Jordan in the Great Western Shootout.

Orem holds at No. 1 in 4A after the stunning victory over Lone Peak. The Tigers also played well against West Jordan before falling to the Jags 78-71 in the Great Western Shootout championship game.

Bountiful remains at No. 2 in this week's KSL Coaches' poll. The Braves survived a scare from Judge Memorial in a 48-42 overtime win on Friday. Sky View is No. 3 while another Cache Valley team makes its debut in the poll. The Logan Grizzlies are 7-1 to start the season. Springville rounds out the poll at No. 5.

Top five performances of the week
Race Parsons, South Sevier
Parsons scored 33 points and knocked down four 3-point shots in a win over Kanab 78-46.Jordan Loveridge, West Jordan
Loveridge put on a show at the Great Western Shootout. He averaged a double-double with a combined 82 points and 44 rebounds in three games leading the Jaguars to the tournament championship.Matthew Cushing, Uintah
Cushing had 20 points, 15 rebounds and 8 assists for the Utes as they lost a heartbreaker to Rock Springs Wyoming 86-83 in overtime.Dalan Bennett, Panguitch
Bennett scored 27 points and pulled down 8 rebounds in a 62-51 victory over Wayne.Trent Snow, Cedar
Snow logged a double-double scoring 24 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in a 58-41 win over Richfield.

Desert Hills remains on top in 3A. The Thunder started the season 7-0 before falling 56-55 in overtime to 4A Timpview on Tuesday.

Cedar is No. 2 thanks to a 5-0 start with each of their wins by double figures. They too suffered their first loss on Tuesday when they were upset by Westlake. Payson falls one spot to No. 3 after dropping a heartbreaker on the road against a ranked Springville team.

Hurricane remains at No. 4 with Morgan moving back into the poll at No. 5. The Trojans only loss is to Cedar and they boast impressive wins over Hurricane, Juan Diego, Delta and Wasatch.

Wasatch Academy is still No. 1 in 2A. The Tigers are the lone undefeated team in 2A and defeated 5A West by 18 on Tuesday. South Sevier holds at No. 2 with a 7-1 record. The Rams only loss is to Wasatch Academy. Richfield is No. 3 followed by Manti and Waterford.

Bryce Valley is the only undefeated team left in 1A. The Mustangs are off to a 5-0 start and remain No.1 the latest poll. Piute moves up to No. 2 after impressive wins over Monticello and Duchesne. The Thunderbirds only loss is a 4-point setback to 2A Beaver. Duchesne is No. 3 followed by Panguitch and Valley.

The next KSL Coaches' Poll will be released on January 3rd.
