PARK CITY — Two teenage girls were critically injured when they hit a tree while tubing down a ski slope at Deer Valley Resort Monday night.

The girls, who were staying at a condo in Deer Valley, were tubing down the Success Run ski hill after the resort had closed the mountain.

“Basically we have limited staff on-hand in the evenings,” said Coleen Reardon, the resort's marketing director. She said when the mountain is closed, it’s not lit, it’s dark, “so we discourage folks from any activity on the mountain after we officially close for the day.”

Reardon says tubing and sledding are not allowed at the resort. She said the mountain is very steep and doesn't lend itself well to that type of activity.

“When you are on a ski mountain, you are really on a mountain and it’s not at all designed for tubing or sledding," she said.

She said tubing and sledding are entirely different sports than skiing and require controlled environments. She said when people ask about tubing, the resort will advise them to go to Gorgoza Park not from the resort, which has a tubing hill.
