Bamberg, Germany (dpa) - Nina Schenk von Stauffenberg, whose husband failed in a 1944 attempt to blow up dictator Adolf Hitler and was executed by a Nazi firing squad, died Sunday at the age of 93.

Her husband, count Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, placed a briefcase bomb under the table of a military briefing room, but the oak table-leg protected Hitler from the force of the July 20, 1944 blast at his secret Wolf's Lair headquarters.

Hitler only suffered cuts and shock. The conspirators were shot and their relatives including the countess thrown into concentration camps. The plotters are honoured as heroes in modern Germany.

The countess, who was born baroness von Lerchenfeld in 1913, married at 20. After surviving the war, she restored her childhood home at Bamberg, southern Germany and provided hospitality to U.S. soldiers based in the city. Her family said she died near Bamberg.
