SALT LAKE CITY - A UTA bus was driving up a hill Wednesday evening and careened into power pole and a tree at B Street and 6th Avenue in Salt Lake City.

Investigators say the transmission on the bus failed and the driver tried to stop the bus from rolling down the hill but the brakes weren't fully functioning.

Several people were hurt in the accident, but those injuries are believed to be minor. Ambulances were on-scene to help those injured.

The bus landed on the sidewalk and among bushes and trees. Only its nose remained in the street. The bus driver was praised for managing to stop the bus before it hit other cars or a building.

"She had to do it backwards. She had to swing the bus backwards," said Benny Chapa, a passenger. "We hit something. And then we hit the wall."

B Street from 6th Avenue to 7th Avenue is closed as crews deal with the accident, and it is expected to remain closed for some time.
