SALT LAKE CITY - The top teams in each classification remained the same with one exception.
The Orem Tigers are the new No. 1 team in 4A. They are off to a 4-0 start that includes victories over Pleasant Grove, Wasatch, West and Taylorsville. The Tigers are one of just two teams in 4A with an undefeated record.
If you enjoy high school basketball you must make it a point to check out the action at this tournament that features Utah teams vs. out-of-state powers. The marquee game Thursday features Nick Emery and Lone Peak against Denver East and point guard Dominic Collier who is a member of the U16 USA Basketball Team. This will be the biggest test thus far for the 3rd ranked Cavemen. This will be a chance for 4th ranked Alta to prove they can compete with the big three (Lone Peak, West Jordan, and AF).No. 1 Desert Hills at Dixie Wednesday 7pm
The Thunder is off to a great start and look to be the clear favorite in 3A. Dixie has enjoyed early season success and is very close to breaking into the top five. This is a great opportunity for the Flyers to make a statement at home.No. 2 Payson at No. 4 Springville 7 p.m.
Payson is 5-0 with all of their wins coming against teams in larger classifications. They get another chance to beat a 4A team but it won't be easy against a ranked Springville team. There is also plenty of history between these two schools that should add some spice to this one.No. 5 Skyline at Highland 7 p.m.
Despite losing leading scorer Jaden Jackson to a transfer in the offseason, Skyline is off to a 4-0 start. A trip to Highland will put that perfect record to the test.
Bountiful drops to No. 2 after their first loss of the season to Viewmont in a 55-50 overtime thriller. Sky View holds at No. 3 followed by Skyline at No. 4. The Eagles are the other undefeated team in 4A and just posted an impressive win over Hunter on Tuesday. Springville rounds out the top five in 4A.
The top four in 5A remain unchanged. Lone Peak, West Jordan and American Fork dominated their competition while Alta survived a trip to Olympus. Davis returns to the top five after 10-point wins over Salem Hills, Bingham and Cottonwood.
Parsons had a night to remember scoring 43 points against previously unbeaten Manti. His performance earned national recognition. More ...Nick Emery, Lone Peak
Emery opened the season with a bang setting a school record with 39 points on 14 of 21 shooting in an 83-53 win over Cottonwood. He knocked down seven 3-ppointers and had 37 points by the end of the 3rd quarter.Justin Johnson, Green River
Johnson scored 40 points and his team needed every one of them in a 67-65 win over GrandClay Banks, Spanish Fork
It came in a loss but you can't ignore a performance like this in a tight contest against a quality team. Banks scored 37 points including five 3-pointers in an 81-77 loss to Logan.Jordan Loveridge, West Jordan
Loveridge could make this list almost every week but what he did Friday against Pleasant Grove was too impressive to not include him in the top five. He had a double-double with 19 points and 19 rebounds. What was most impressive is he out-rebounded the entire Pleasant Grove team 19-16.
Desert Hills is still No. 1 in 3A after crushing Juan Diego and Juab. The Thunder will be tested this week with three road games at Dixie, Delta and Spanish Fork. Payson vaults to No. 2 in this week's poll after a wins against Provo, Salem Hills and Mountain View. Cedar is the other undefeated team in 3A. They come in at No. 3 this week followed by Hurricane and Park City.
Wasatch Academy is still undefeated and ranked No. 1 in 2A after wins over Waterford and North Sanpete. The 2nd ranked South Sevier Rams had a week to remember stunning 5A contender Fremont 65-50 on the road followed by a 43 point performance by Race Parsons in a win over No. 3 Manti. The Templars remain at No. 3 despite the loss followed by undefeated Richfield and Gunnison.
The 1A poll debuts this week and Bryce Valley is No. 1. The Mustangs are off to a 3-0 start. They are followed by Duchesne, Panguitch, Layton Christian and Monticello.
