(KSL News) -- Trying to steal an unmarked Sheriff deputies car while the deputy is still in it is pretty tough, and yet a serial car thief in Millard County gave it a try.

Officers were doing surveillance on an abandoned car along I- 15 on Saturday.

Deputies say John Whitehead pulled up next to the unmarked sheriff's vehicle. He then walked right up to the vehicle dressed in black, carrying a flashlight like a club, ready to break in. The deputy says he waited until Whitehead was at the window, then greeted him at gunpoint. Whitehead claims he was just checking to see if the deputy was okay, but a search on Whitehead connected him to several other abandoned car break-ins along I-15 from Nephi to Las Vegas.

Whitehead was arrested.
