OGDEN — A house at 604 S. Van Buren, its contents, two vehicles and a shed were destroyed Saturday morning by a fire. Officials say the fire was started by a 4-year-old child playing with a lighter.
Ten people were in the house when the fire broke out about 10 a.m. but all escaped injury. Fire officials estimated the loss of the structures, possessions and vehicles at $95,000.
Family members were cooking breakfast when the fire started. According to a statement from the Ogden City Fire Department, an older teenager noticed the fire when walking to a back bedroom of the house.
Five fire engines and more than 20 firefighters and paramedics responded to the fire.
The home's occupants -- a family of five that lives in the home and five visitors -- were receiving assistance from Red Cross and other family members in the area.
Fire officials are reminding homeowners to keep lighters or matches out of the reach of children.
