SALT LAKE CITY — A 13-year-old boy remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday with injuries he suffered Thursday when he was apparently struck by a falling tree branch.
The boy was walking on a sidewalk near 350 South and 800 East around 7 a.m. when the branch fell, according to Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan.
"It was related to the wind," he said.
Paramedics responded to the area after it was reported that someone was lying on the sidewalk and appeared to be unconscious, Salt Lake fire spokesman Scott Freitag said. When officials arrived, a large branch was near the boy's body and he appeared to have suffered a significant, traumatic head injury.
The boy did not have identification on him and paramedics took him to an area hospital and submitted him as John Doe. In the meantime, his parents called police to report that their child was missing and officials made the connection.
McGowan said the boy remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday.
Jason Olsen, spokesman for the Salt Lake City School District, confirmed that there were reports of a student who was injured yesterday. He said the boy is a student at Bryant Middle School, 40 S. 800 East.
