Flood Warning in Effect for Parts of Southern Utah

It's only minor flooding right now -- nothing compared to what we saw in January 2005 -- but the National Weather Service wants people to stay away from streams and rivers in South-Central Iron County and Washington County.

Streams that feed the Virgin River and the Santa Clara river are running at higher levels and are dangerous to be near, according to the weather service.

In Gunlock, an area heavily effected by the flooding last year, a temporary road built after last year's flood has now been washed out. But that's about the extent of the damage.

Dean Cox, Washington County Emergency Services: "We have seen the streams rise abruptly. However, they haven't pushed out of their banks, or really become a dangerous flood flow. If the moisture were to continue on unabated for a day or two, then my concern would get a lot greater."

This is the first major flow of the spring season. Several factors could impact whether this gets worse: Snow-runoff from up north, how hot it gets down south, and the wildcard, how much rain Northern and Southern Utah will get.

The flood warning will stay in effect until nine o'clock tonight.
