OREM — Nordstrom Friday announced plans to close its store at University Mall in Orem. Originally opened in March 2002, the 122,000-square foot store will close to the public on Feb. 24, 2012, a news release stated. The Seattle-based, high-end retailer operates 225 stores in 30 states.
Nordstrom will continue to operate three other Utah locations, including the full-line department store at Fashion Place in Murray, Nordstrom Rack in Sugar House and the Commons at South Towne Rack in Sandy. In addition, the company will open a new full-line Nordstrom store at City Creek Center in Salt Lake City in March 2012.
“After 10 years of being part of the Orem community, this was a tough decision to make,” said president Blake Nordstrom. “Despite our team’s best effort, this store hasn’t ever performed to the level we need it to and it just doesn't make good business sense to continue operating here.”
The closure will impact approximately 170 nonseasonal employees. Nordstrom said those employees who want to continue on with the company will likely have a position available for them at one of the other locations.
For those eligible employees who will not stay on with the company after the Orem store closure, severance packages will be available.
