SALT LAKE CITY — Despite starting out with relatively warm day, Mother Nature changed her mind and blew in the snow Friday night. Ready or not, it's winter time in Utah.

If you want to know if a storm is coming, just check Big O Tires in Salt Lake. This week, the shop has been filled with cars from those who heeded the warnings of weather forecasters.

KSL Weather Team's forecast
In northern Utah, snow storms are expected in most areas from 9 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. Lake-effect snow should kick in around 7 a.m. Saturday and last until 1 p.m. Expected snow totals:
  • Valleys: 1-3 inches
  • Benches: 2-6 inches
  • Northern mountains: 6-12 inches
  • Central Utah: 3-6 inches
  • Southern mountains: 8-14 inches

Winter is coming in a big way this weekend, but the real rush, manager Brent Wachter said, will come after the storm. "The storm kind of reminds everybody what they need to get ready for," he said.

The Utah Avalanche Center is up and running for the season, and the Utah Department of Transportation is bracing for the blow — reminding drivers to watch out for plows.

"It can create a hazardous situation if people aren't careful around them," said UDOT spokesman Lee Nitchman. "We want them to give plows plenty of room: slow down to allow people to maneuver in the snow and adjust for changing conditions."

Rocky Mountain Power representatives say they are as ready as they can be for the storm. If you have power issues, contact them at 1-877-508-5088.

By 9 p.m. Friday, rain had already started to turn to snow across the Wasatch Front, and that snow is expected continue through midday Saturday.
