SUGAR HOUSE — A drive-through stop for an early morning breakfast resulted in $1 million in damage to a McDonald's at 945 E. 2100 South Saturday when the driver's older model pickup truck caught on fire. The two-alarm fire quickly spread to the restaurant attic, gutting the building.
No injuries resulted from the fire, which started shortly before 3:30 a.m., said Salt Lake City Batallian Chief Gary McCarty. The restaurant had been open 24 hours a day.
The fire started in the engine compartment of vehicle, a late '70 Ford extended cab pickup truck, McCarty said. Investigators believe the fire started in ventilation system for the truck's heater.
"When we got there, it (the pickup) was pretty much gone and the structure was fully involved," he said.
The restaurant is closed for business, McCarty said.
