SALT LAKE CITY -- The community has pitched in generously to help send the body of an Iraqi interpreter who worked with U.S. forces and died in Utah back to his family in Baghdad.
Diyar al-Bayati died in Salt Lake City last month. He'd been living in Utah for several years --arriving there as a refugee after working as a translator in Iraq with military contractor L-3/Titan.
In 2006, on the last of 200 missions, Al-Bayati was hit by an roadside bomb. He lost both legs and one arm was mangled.
After news of his passing was reported here and elsewhere, friends, family, and even complete strangers pitched in to raise more than $3600 to send him back to Iraq for proper burial.
Those who wish to donate they can do so through the Iraqi Hope Foundation in Al-Bayati's name.
