Jon Dunn reportingMany students in Utah are tested to the hilt. But, instead of complaining about the amount, what are some ways we can help our students fight test anxiety? In some U.S. schools, they are using meditation.
Have you ever counted the amount of tests students in Utah have to take?
Susan McKelvey is a counselor at East High School in Salt Lake City. She says you can add college entrance tests to that as well. You know, we've all heard about making sure your student has a full night's sleep and a good breakfast.
But meditation? It's not that far fetched. Some schools on the east coast are teaching just that.
McKelvey says when she administers college entrance exams, she definitely encourages students to take those deep breaths and relax.
Now don't look for these types of practices to make their way into Utah schools, at least not statewide. But it doesn't mean those at the State level know what a benefit it can be.
Dawn Kay is with counseling at the State Office of Education.
Both Kay and McKelvey say it's about pressure, and making sure you don't place too much on your kids.
