DAYTON, Ohio, Mar 14, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A new Encyclopedia of Appalachia aims to provide everything anyone could possibly know about a region that covers parts of 13 states.

The 2,000 entries range from "New Deal Communities" to "Coon Dog Cemetery," from "Skillet Lickers" to "Gays and Lesbians," from "Knotts, Don" to "Fatback (see Pork)," the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. There is also, of course, an entry for "Hillbilly."

"The hillbilly both attracts and repels, representing both the complexity of Appalachia and the ambivalence about the region in the public mind," co-editor Jean Haskell wrote.

At $79 and nearly 2,000 pages, the encyclopedia is likely to sell better to libraries and schools than to the general public.

The book, published by the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services at East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee Press, includes the work of 1,500 contributors and editors. It gets its official unveiling Friday in Dayton, Ohio, at a conference, "Both Ends of the Road: Making the Appalachian Connection," sponsored by the Appalachian Studies Association.
