NORTH OGDEN -- A woman accused of scuffling with police officers in North Ogden now faces a charge of sexual battery. Police call it the first case of its kind in that city in at least 15 years.
The Standard-Examiner reports police were called to the home of 37-year-old Bonnie Cain on Sept. 19. They arrived to find Cain yelling obscenities at neighbors over a past dispute, with children present.
Officers questioned her and tried to take her into custody. A probable cause statement indicates officers took Cain to the ground, but she attacked one officer's groin, punching him three times.
Ultimately officers had to use a Taser on Cain to subdue her. Police say she continued to use "socially unacceptable words" as she was led to a police car.
The Examiner reports Cain smelled of alcohol and had been drinking for several days after the death of an in-law. She was arrested for sexual battery, assault on an officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and propelling a substance at a correctional officer while being booked into the Weber County Jail.
Detective Paul Rhoades told the paper this is the first time in his 15 years he's seen sexual battery charges applied in this type of case. But police say that charge is not always reserved for sex cases. Language in the statute includes behavior intended to cause pain, so they believe Cain's actions fit the law.
The officer was not seriously wounded.
Cain posted bail and is next due in court on Nov. 1.
