AMERICAN FORK — The Alpine and Tooele school districts have been awarded federal grants totaling more than $1.4 million to implement physical education and nutrition programs.

The two districts are among 76 schools and community-based organizations nationwide to receive the Carol M. White Physical Education Grants totaling $35 million. Alpine was awarded $714,943 and Tooele received $725,641.

The grant money will be used for initiating, expanding and enhancing P.E. and nutrition programs during class time and after-school programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

“As a result of these grants, schools will have additional resources to help students become healthier and more active,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said.
