DUNDEE, Scotland, Mar 12, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A Scottish university's campus could soon be enriched by a 90-foot statue of a nude woman with one hand on the roof of the science building.
Bio-Colossus is the brain child of David Mach, a sculptor best know for Big Heids, an installation of red heads near the M8 motorway. He plans to unveil a 9-foot version of the large statue proposed for the University of Dundee this week, Scotland on Sunday reported.
Mach's plan was rejected in Belfast, when church groups in a city dominated by strait-laced Protestants objected. So far, in Dundee, the university and arts officials are enthusiastic.
"Bio-Colossus is great because it mirrors the attitude of the university itself: our feet are on the ground but our head and our ideas are in the clouds," said Geoff Ward, the university's deputy principal.
But some local residents and officials do not want the statue. One woman called it "offensive in the extreme" and Wendy Wrieden, head of the local community council, suggested that a 90-foot nude might not be appropriate in a neighborhood that combines the university with residential areas.
