Carole Mikita Reporting President Gordon B. Hinckley is planning to leave tomorrow for Santiago, Chile and a temple dedication. The last time President Gordon B. Hinckley made a media appearance, was his trip to Sharon, Vermont, late last December. Then, he was paying tribute to church founder, Joseph Smith through a satellite broadcast.

Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley: "And there's something very significant about the fact that we're reaching back and forth almost all the way across this continent."

A month later, President Hinckley went to LDS Hospital for a routine screening and immediately underwent surgery to remove a cancerous portion of his large intestine. He stayed for a week, spent more days recovering at home, and has been back to work. However, his pace is nothing like the whirlwind, 'round the world tour he took last summer.

In two weeks, he traveled to Vladivostock, Russia to meet with church members; Seoul, South Korea for a huge celebration and meeting; Taipei, Taiwan to dedicate a new chapel; and Hong Kong, China for the dedication of a church high rise.

Pres. Hinckley: "What matters most is the kindness of their hearts, and we feel that wherever we go."

Next, he traveled to New Delhi, India where a thousand Latter-day Saints gathered to hear him; then onto Nairobi, Kenya for another meeting; and finally to West Africa, where in Aba, Nigeria, the young church members performed for him. The following day he dedicated a new temple.

The temple may not be new in Santiago, Chile, but he plans to travel to rededicate this house of worship, originally built in 1983 and closed for the past year for remodeling and expansion.

We here at Eyewitness News will travel to Santiago, as well, and bring you reports of that country's cultural celebration, the newly-renovated temple, and President Hinckley's interaction with the people of Chile.

The cultural celebration in Santiago takes place Saturday night.
