BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A woman was transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition Thursday after her car landed in a river.

The woman, who is in her 40s, and a male passenger in his 30s, were traveling down Big Cottonwood Canyon near 6000 East around 3 p.m. when the accident occurred, Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said. The Jeep Wrangler the woman was driving veered left, crossing over the uphill lane, the shoulder of the roadway and landing passenger-side down in the river.

Hoyal said the drop was about 10 feet.

"She was extremely critical," he said of the driver, who had to be transported by medical helicopter to University Hospital.

Though the vehicle landed on his side, the passenger was treated and released at the scene. It is unclear whether the pair was wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

"Based on our preliminary investigation, the initial evidence observed at the scene, alcohol was a factor in the crash," Hoyal said.

The accident remains under investigation.
