This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
You may have heard the news that Google picked Kansas City, Kansas as the testing grounds for their Google Fiber project. It will bring ultra fast Internet connection to customers through the use of fiber optic cables.
But, did you know a Utah company is already offering this service? That's right, Beehive Telephone Company in Tooele has been putting in fiber optic cables that provide super fast Internet service for several years. Through building and placing fiber optic cables, their network now stretches from Bountiful to Battle Mountain, Nevada. I'm sure Beehive is one of the reasons why Utah was one of only two states to receive a Grade A for being one of the most tech savvy states.
Art Brothers founded Beehive Telephone Company as a small public utility business almost 50 years ago. He built a strong infrastructure for his company and slowly started collecting customers. He brought Chuck McCown on board twenty-five years ago and they've steadily grown the business. They serve some of the largest venues in Salt Lake City. Their latest addition is a several hundred channel IPTV system capable of delivering content far above that of cable and other satellite systems.
One thing this company is known for is helping underserved areas or little pockets of clients in remote areas receive telephone or Internet service. Just this year they provided telephone service to a ranch in Nevada that's never had one until now. Chuck and Art are constantly trying to conquer new mountains where others have said it can't be done. And if it doesn't exist at the price they want? No problem, they find a way to make it work and create it themselves.
Starting companies is not anything new for Chuck. He's started over 30 companies in his lifetime, most of them at his kitchen table with help from his wife, Jenny. They used to joke that if the product wasn't started on their kitchen table, it wasn't going to be successful. A couple of his children work with him at Beehive Telephone Company.
