Cleon Wall, KSL Newsradio Senate republican leaders are now calling for an ethics investigation of Idaho senator Larry Craig, who has suddenly found himself defending his name.

Sen. Bob Bennett feels bad for his friend but realizes the seriousness at the heart of Craig's conviction. "You cannot easily explain away a guilty plea," he said.

And that's why Bennett says they referred the issue to the Senate Ethics Committee for an investigation.

He also doesn't blame Mitt Romney's campaign for its strong stance against Craig. "They have to distance themselves from someone who has engaged in illegal activity," he said.

Bennett and Craig were Senate liaisons for Romney's presidential bid.
