LOGAN — Logan quarterback DJ Nelson threw six touchdowns and scrambled for another as he led his Grizzlies over the Bountiful Braves 56-31, Friday night.
Nelson said the last two times the teams have played each other, Bountiful "out-physicalled" Logan.
"We got kinda sick of it," the 5-foot-10 senior said. "Our offense really came out tonight and during the first drive we tempo'd (Bountiful) as fast as we could."
The scoring onslaught started with 7:29 left in the first quarter when Nelson tossed a 17-yarder to junior receiver Hagen Anderson to put Logan up 7-0 after a Jake Thompson point-after.
On the ensuing Bountiful drive, Logan senior cornerback Johnny Luke intercepted a pass from Braves quarterback Cam Zollinger and ran it back 33 yards for the pick-six, making the score 14-0.
Nelson and the Grizzlies walked all over Bountiful in the first half, but the Braves were able to get a field goal with 6:20 left in the second quarter, which eventually ended 42-3.
The Logan defense stifled the Braves, allowing 1.9 yards per play while giving up just three points in the first half and two offensive touchdowns all night.
"Our defense played great," Logan head coach Mike Favero said. "The line stopped the run, which is what our 4-2-5 defense is all about."
Bountiful made a small comeback in the fourth quarter, thanks to a couple of big plays against the second-team Logan defense.
The first Bountiful touchdown came with 3:16 left in the third quarter.
Senior running back Alex Arona took a handoff into the endzone from three yards out to make it 49-10 after Braves senior kicker Garret Jones hit the extra-point attempt.
Bountiful struck again at the start of the fourth when Logan backup QB Travis Sanchez threw an interception to Bountiful senior Adam Alvey who ran back 51 yards for the score, 49-17.
A minute later, sophomore Ryan Curtis recovered a fumble at the Logan five-yard-line and fell into the endzone to score another TD, 49-24.
After a Nelson-Thompson touchdown for Logan, Bountiful senior running back Keaton Newbold broke several tackles to go 80 yards for the final touchdown of the game with just over four minutes remaining, 56-31.
Nelson had 18 carries for 80 yards in addition to his 24 pass completions on 37 attempts for Logan.
"DJ played well," Favero said. "He really knows the offense and he's a competitor."
The game brings Logan's record to 3-0 and drops Bountiful to 1-2.
Logan next plays Spanish Fork on the road while Bountiful will host Viewmont. Both games will be Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
